Green Meal Replacement Smoothie

One of the key benefits of the green protein smoothie is its ability to provide a quick and easy breakfast solution. With our busy lifestyles, finding time to prepare a nutritious meal can be challenging. However, by simply blending together ingredients such as leafy greens, frozen fruits, and protein powder, you can have a satisfying meal in minutes.

This Green Smoothie provides one serve of protein, a fruit serve, and a vegetable serving, so it is a good start to the day's nutrition.

Protein Smoothie - Weight Training

A protein smoothie after your weight training routine is a great habit. Having a smoothie with essential nutrients and protein helps support muscle growth and recovery.

When it comes to weight training, protein is crucial for repairing and building muscles. The most bio-available type of protein is Whey Protein Isolate (WPI). WPI is able to be utilised by the body better than other forms of protein powders. Including a green protein smoothie in your diet can provide you with the necessary amino acids needed for muscle repair and growth. Plus, a green smoothie also includes leafy greens which are high in vitamins, minerals, and polyphenols!

These ingredients not only provide nutritional benefits to athletes but also help in maintaining overall health.

Weight Loss Smoothie

To use this smoothie as a tool for weight loss simply replace a meal, preferably breakfast with this smoothie. Unlike other commercially produced shakes, this smoothie includes real ingredients and has a more natural flavour. The smoothie is also very filling due to the thick and cream consistency.

It has a high fibre content which helps promote satiety while supporting digestion. Additionally, incorporating leafy greens into your smoothie provides essential vitamins and minerals while keeping calorie intake in check. The protein and fibre are at optimal levels to maintain satiety.

Green Smoothie Ingredients

The ingredients I used in this Green Smoothie are:

  • Unsweetened Coconut Milk
  • 50g baby Spinach
  • 1 frozen banana (cut in half)
  • 1 Sachet 93 Green Vanilla Protein Powder
  • 1 TBS Chia Seeds

I simply blended all of these ingredients together until the protein shake was smooth and creamy without any lumps.

Alternative Ingredient Add-ins

Depending on your purpose you may want to "pimp your smoothie" and add alternative ingredients.

Athlete Extra Add-ins

If you need additional fuel for your workout, you may wish to add some healthy fats to the smoothie. These ingredients will also add more energy and additional nutrients.

  • Avocado (healthy fats, energy)
  • Greek Yoghurt (extra protein)
  • Nut Butter (healthy fats and protein)

Milk Alternatives

Choose your favourite milk for this smoothie, all types will work although I love the coconut flavour with the vanilla of the protein powder.

  • Soy Milk
  • Regular milk
  • Oat Milk
  • Almond Milk
  • Coconut Milk

Leafy Alternatives

  • Baby Spinach
  • Kale
  • English Spinach
  • Broccoli
  • Beet Greens

Which Protein Powder is Best?

I have used 93 Green (Vanilla) as my protein powder for this recipe. I have chosen this protein powder because it is a whey protein powder. Whey protein is the most bio available type of protein. You can find out how much protein you need each day here.

The whey in 93 Green is sourced from New Zealand's grass feed cow's. 30g of protein powder includes 4.5g of BCAA and a generous amount of collagen.

93 Green is also made from compostable packaging. This was important to the company as each serve is a single sachet for convenience. Steve, (the founder) is an avid scuba diver and didn't want any of the packaging he put into the market becoming an environmental issue, so compostable packaging was the choice.

The company also donates a percentage of profits to removing plastics from the ocean and the protection of endangered apex predators.

So when you purchase your protein powder you know you are not only doing something good for your body, but positive for the environment.

Protein Smoothie FAQ

Do I need a Thermomix to make this recipe?

No. This recipe can be made with any high-powered blender.

Is this a Vegan Recipe?

No, This Green Smoothie recipe uses Whey Protein Isolate. Whey Protein is the most bio-available protein powder but is derived from milk.

Are Green Smoothies Healthy?

Green smoothies are as healthy as the ingredient in the smoothie. Adding a balance of ingredients and not overloading with too much fruit produces a healthy smoothie.

Can you have a Green Smoothie Each Day?

Yes! As long as you are getting protein, fibre and healthy fats from your breakfast it is safe to have a smoothie each day. It is good to vary the add-in to allow your body a variety of nutrients.

Are Smoothies high in sugar?

Commercially prepared smoothies often include fruit juice, gelato, and frozen yoghurt. Plus they may also have 2 or 3 fruits and just a small amount of green leaves. These are high in sugar and not recommended.

When you make your own smoothie you should be mindful of using just one fruit serve and not adding fruit juice to the smoothie. The recipe above is an example of a smoothie that is not high in simple carbohydrates.

Are Smoothies Better than Fruit Juice for You?

Yes! Fruit juice is a poor choice as it has had all the fibre removed. This means the juice will cause a spike in blood sugar levels. Whereas the smoothie has foods in its natural form which still needs to be broken down by the body before the sugars can be released. This creates a slow rise in blood sugar allowing the body to use the sugar as energy.
