Thermomix Vegetable Puree is often one of the first things a mother will want to make for a new baby. It is an ideal first food nutritionally, as it contains lots of vitamins and minerals. Plus, using the Thermomix, you can start with a smooth and thinner consistency ideal for baby food and adjust the texture as your baby's skills develop.

Why We Feed Baby
Did you know that feeding your baby does more than nourish? Here are a few reasons and things to consider when introducing foods to your 6-month-old.
- What nutrients are first to deplete from birth to 6 months during breastfeeding? These are usually Vitamin D and K, as they are available in breast milk.
- The level of the baby's hunger and the ability to satiate and settle.
- Development of oral skills, tongue movement, and lips for pre-speech.
- Hand mouth co-ordination and development
- Encouraging independence and learning new skills.
As a mother of five children and a Nutritionist, this is one of my favourite topics, but I won't linger too much. When my children were small, I liked to serve some meals that were all about nutrition, some that I was aiming to let them feed themselves, and other more calorie-dense meals at times when I knew their hunger was harder to satisfy.
When they were being fussy, I could always come back to pureed vegetables, mashed potatoes, smooshed bananas, and later, zucchini slice.
Vegetable Puree Thermomix
Making vegetable puree for baby food in the Thermomix is so simple! Unlike the conventional saucepan method, you don't have to watch the stove or worry about water boiling over or boiling dry. Once cooked, no labor-intensive mashing is needed to get all the little lumps out.

A Thermomix For Baby
When you look at how easy it is to make vegetable puree in the Thermomix you will understand why I sell so many Thermomixes to new mums.
I often tell grandmas that new mums should be given a Thermomix as they leave hospital. They already have their hands full with the baby, and once the introduction to solid food starts, it gets exponentially harder.
Plus, we all know about "mummy guilt." As mums, we have this idea while we are pregnant: we will feed our baby organic homemade food from our well stocked, tidy fridge, stored in glass jars and sprinkled with fairy dust.
The only way to do that is hands-free and in bulk. So, it's easier to make baby food, fruit and vegetable puree in the Thermomix. Don't forget to forward this article to anyone who needs a hint!
Benefits of Thermomix with Baby
- The Thermomix is completely hands-free, so you don't need to be in the kitchen.
- The Thermomix is quick and easy, requiring less chopping and cleaning up.
- Just one piece of equipment is used, and it cleans itself.
- Pureed fruit and vegetables are eaten by babies, and then mashed vegetables are eaten by children. So mums make this type of food often and for a lot of years. It is good to have a quick and easy method.
- It's safer to cook pureed vegetables in the Thermomix than on a stove with boiling water in a saucepan. The lid is locked into place, and the Thermomix can't be pulled over.
- The Thermomix steams the vegetables in the internal steam basket for maximum nutrient retention of the puree.
- A wider variety of homemade foods and purees.
- Making your baby's food is so much more economical. This recipe costs $2 for 10 servings or 20c per serving. In Woolworths, one serving is $1.20, so you save $1 per meal. That's $6 per day and $42 per week. Did you know a Thermomix is $28 per week on 24 months interest-free finance?
- The baby becomes familiar with eating home-cooked food and will gradually eat the way you eat.
Pureed Vegetable Tips
This recipe is for plain pureed vegetables, suitable for baby food. For an older child, such as a toddler or school age, you may want to add milk, salt, pepper, butter, cream, and cinnamon or herbs to give it more flavour.
The cooking time is a guide only. The exact cooking time will depend on how large the vegetables are chopped.
Always check that they are soft before pureeing. If they aren't soft, add another 5 minutes of cooking time, or the puree won't be as smooth.
- 20-25 minutes - for sweet potato, carrots, pumpkin, and potato.
- 10-15 minutes - for peas, cauliflower, broccoli, zucchini, and green beans.
- 15 minutes - apple and pear
You can easily adapt this puree recipe to any type of fruit or vegetable that you have on hand. You will quickly learn your baby's favorite fruit or vegetable puree.
How To Store Vegetable Puree
This recipe is great for batch cooking and freezing. I have used little silicone freezing pods. The pods are larger than ice cubes, and they come with a lid that prevents spillage. Once frozen, the Thermomix baby food is removed so much more easily. The purees can be transferred into ziplock bags, and the pods can be re-used.
With the vegetable puree in ziplock bags, the baby food takes up less room in the freezer, and you can more easily see what type of puree is in the bag.
This makes it quicker to choose a portion and match flavours or select a fruit puree as dessert.
FAQ Vegetable Puree Thermomix
Depending on how old your child is, the vegetable puree can be stored in the fridge for 2 days. Half-eaten portions should be discarded and not reheated.
Babies and young children haven't developed a taste for salt like adults may have, so they will not notice its absence. It is best to omit added salt, particularly for younger children.
Yes, silicone is perfectly safe for everyone at heat and in the cold.
Yes, frozen vegetables can be stored in freezer bags.
Ideally, the vegetable cubes should be placed into the freezer the night before they are required. They defrost in the fridge. Once defrosted, place them in a bowl and heat in a microwave.
Introduce a new vegetable slowly. Sometimes, it can be best to mix a little bit in with a food they do like such as potato. Slowly increase the amount of the new food in the potato until you can feed the new food without potato, or with potato on the side.
