Thermomix white rice, perfect and fluffy every time! It's easy when you know how!! I have a few tips and tricks to share.
Rice should always be cooked in the Thermomix! I know some people will say that's a big call, and yes, I have had rice cookers before... but I do have a list of why it is so much easier to cook rice in the Thermomix.
Why I prefer Thermomix white rice
- I can leave the kitchen for 20 minutes without worrying about stirring or watching the rice, unlike a saucepan.
- It doesn't get drier and more cooked on the bottom like in the rice cooker
- The rice is fluffier due to the boiling water flowing over the rice, unlike the rice cooker
- No dangerous saucepan handles on the stove for kids to grab.
- No bubbling over of water, unlike the saucepan and rice cooker.
- It just has a better taste and texture.
Regardless of which Thermomix you are using, the TM31, TM5, TM6 or TM7, this recipe will give you delicious, fluffy rice every time.
Tips for Cooking Perfect Thermomix White Rice
I know everyone has their own method of cooking rice but the tips will help you get perfect results.
- Wash the rice under flowing cold tap water. (I promise this is essential to fluffy rice. Every country I have ever visited has insisted on washing the rice first.)
- Be gentle with the rice when you wash it. Don't crush it; breaking the grain will make gluggy rice.
- Don't add anything except water to the TM bowl. No salt.
- Don't drain the rice after it has cooked. Serve it as is.
What Setting should rice be cooked on?
White rice is best cooked on manual mode. The rice cooker mode of the TM6 and TM7 does give the best result for plain white rice.
TM7 Settings for white rice
Go to manual mode. The blades symbol takes you to manual mode. Select 20 minutes on the first wheel. 120 degrees on the second wheel, then tap the numbers on the final wheel and select 4. Hit the green arrow at the bottom of the screen to start cooking.

TM5 and TM6 Settings for white rice
The TM5 and TM6 are already in manual mode when the machine is turned on. You will see 3 circles.
Start with the first circle on the right of the screen. Tap on that circle and use the silver selector on the right, and turn until 20 minutes is showing. Tap the middle circle, and it will become large. Now use the silver circle to select "Varoma." Varoma is the hottest setting. Now tap the final circle and turn the selector until the number 4 is showing.
The arms will come over the lid, and cooking will commence automatically.

How to Store Cooked Rice
Storing rice in the fridge
All cooked white rice has the same fridge life. Rice should only be kept for 3 to 4 days.
For food safety purposes, rice should be refrigerated as soon as possible. There is no need to allow the rice to come to room temperature on the bench. Doing this can prolong the cooling time, causing the rice to spend longer in the danger zone (between 5 - 60 degrees Celsius).
Storing rice in the freezer
Freezing cooked rice is easy and VERY handy!
Once the rice is cool enough to handle, use ziplock bags to freeze it. Simply place the rice in the bag. Distribute the rice in the bag so it is an even thickness. Lay the rice pouches flat in your freezer.
This method makes reheating the rice quicker. It also allows you to use a portion of the rice by simply breaking it off, as it's not a solid brick of rice.

How long does frozen rice last?
This is a tricky question, and the internet has lots of answers and opinions. The consensus is that rice will last in the freezer for between 1 and 6 months. That's a large time variation, so why is there a discrepancy?
Firstly, the rice won't go off in the freezer, so you don't need to worry about food poisoning. The guideline of between 1 and 6 months refers to how palatable the rice is when it's reheated. Once the rice is cooked and frozen, it will start to lose moisture. After one month, there is no real noticeable difference in the texture or taste. Beyond one month, you may notice the rice start to have a more crumbly, dry appearance and texture.
How quickly the rice deteriorates will depend on how well the container is sealed & your freezer temperature. At the end of the day, storage time will come down to personal preference and how the rice is being used. If it isn't the centrepiece of your meal, like nasi goreng you may feel fine about using rice that has been stored longer.
My tip: if you are using the rice for fried rice or Nasi Goreng, use rice that has been frozen for a month or shorter. If you need rice to accompany a curry, up to 4 months seems to still be fine in our household.

Sarita says
I like to cook my rice using broth I have frozen from boiling vegetables or chicken (instead of plain water), as this flavours the rice immensely. Do you think this would still work using your Thermomix recipe above, if I was to use the same weight of frozen broth, melt it in Thermo before proceeding? I just notice you say not to even add salt to the water, so not sure if this would affect the end result - worth a try I guess?
Julie Carlyle says
Hi Sarita
I am so sorry it took so long for me to see your question. Yes this would work perfectly and taste delicious. Use the same method, just make sure your broth starts at room temperature just like tap water would.
Happy Cooking

Finally a recipe that’s easy and works everytime! Thank you xx
Julie Carlyle says
Yep, It's my "go-to" rice recipe 🙂
Shobhana Patel says
If we scale down the quantity, the water and cooking time will stay the same right? Or should we reduce it?
Thanks
Julie Carlyle says
Hi Shobhana
Thank you for your question.
Yes, that is correct. If you decrease the rice it is still cooked with the same amount of water and the same cooking time.
Happy cooking
Julie
